This is an honors course intended mainly for sophomores who have
completed Physics 9H--ABC and Math 21ABCD. It is offered only in the
fall quarter. The subject matter is equivalent to that of Physics 9C.
However, 9HD is more demanding mathematically and assumes prior knowledge
of special relativity. It is typically taught from Purcell's textbook, which is
the best physics text I've ever seen for any course at any level.
I include an optional
reading list for anyone who wants to learn some interesting physics
while taking a break from problem sets, or who wants a good conversation
starter for talking to a professor. (The reading list is dated, since I
last taught this class in Fall 2002.)
