REU Program, Summer 2012
Fourteen students (5 women, 9 men) participated in the UC Davis Physics REU in summer 2012. Research Projects (more details)Projects were in Condensed Matter Physics, Biological Physics, Nuclear Physics, High Energy Experiment, General Relativity, and Cosmology.Field Trips (more details)Summer 2012 destinations included Lake Berryessa, Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Lick Observatory, McClellan Nuclear Research Center, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and Lake Tahoe including the Tahoe Environmental Research Center.Other ActivitiesAt the end of the program, each student gave a 15-minute research presentation and prepared a final write-up of the project.
HousingWe used a new housing arrangement this year. Students from past programs lived in campus dormitories and had meal plans at a campus dining hall. This year we rented one of the buildings of an on-campus student housing co-operative. Most of the students loved the arrangement, even though it required more household chores of them. The biggest such task was that each student had one assigned night per week to cook dinner and another to clean up. Several students thought the shared work was a positive factor in helping the group bond. (Below left, two of the bedroom doors; below right: students hanging out in the dining room.) |
