UC Davis
REU Program, Summer 2007
Twelve students (6 women, 6 men) participated in the UC Davis Physics REU in summer 2007. Research Projects (more details)Projects were in Condensed Matter Physics, Biophysics, Computational Complex Systems, Nuclear Physics, High Energy Theory, General Relativity, and Cosmology.Field Trips (more details)In 2007 we visited the San Francisco Exploratorium and the coastal redwoods of nearby Muir Woods; toured the McClellan Nuclear Radiation Center; stayed overnight at Lake Tahoe; toured Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center; camped in Lassen Volcanic National Park after visiting the Hat Creek Radio Observatory; and experienced the KeckCAVES visualization environment at UC Davis.Other ActivitiesDuring the first week, students attended four introductory talks on major ideas in different areas of current physics research. Later there were two question-and-answer sessions about graduate school. The first featured the regional representative for the IGERT fellowship program and focused on funding. The second, with a physics professor who has served as chair of our graduate admissions committee and department Vice-Chair for graduate affairs, dealt with admissions issues including GRE exams, taking time off before graduate school, and choosing writers for recommendation letters.
Over two afternoons near the end of the program, each student gave a
15-to-20 minute research presentation. The entire physics department
was invited to attend the talks. The students also submitted final
write-ups of their work, which can be viewed by following the link near
the top of the page for "more details" on the research projects. |
